Report

How University of Rijeka addresses the SDGs

Starting with the premise that individual activities of academic staff contribute to several of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals at once, University of Rijeka and its constituents make a multifaceted contribution towards achieving the SDGs and improving the well-being of society as a whole. On their website, University of Rijeka provides a comprehensive overview of their contributions to each of the SDGs.

Report

Nudging. A tool for sustainable behaviour?

The report aims to synthesize existing knowledge about the effects achievable with nudging on consumption and the environment, in what areas nudging according to research can have the best effect and how nudging should be applied to give the best effect. The study comprised a literature review and interviews to collect experiences of working with nudging available in some countries.

Framework

The Little Book of Green Nudges: 40 Nudges to Spark Sustainable Behaviour on Campus

The higher education community has unique opportunities to influence the citizens of tomorrow and to test nudges in real-world laboratories. “The Little Book of Green Nudges” shares a practical framework and 40 nudges that can be adopted by colleges and universities, from the small-scale to the large, depending on your resources and context. By embracing this approach, leaders and activists on campus can facilitate more sustainable decisions and help reduce the approximately 75 per cent of personal emissions that come from what we eat, how we travel and the homes we live in.3 This book does not contain all the answers on how best to change behaviour in every circumstance. Nudging projects will play out differently in different parts of the world, on different types of campuses, and among different genders and cultural groups. But everyone can learn from insights gained along the way.

Guideline

Green Nudges Playbook

This playbook is a practical guide for policymakers who wish to embed behavioural science insights into policymaking to help citizens live more sustainably.

It is a template with general guiding principles to support policymakers when partnering with businesses to scope and implement behaviour change initiatives that discourage the consumption of single-use coffee1 cups, in favour of reusable alternatives. Our ambition is that policymakers across the globe apply these guiding principles to other SUP materials and behaviours which are appropriate to their country’s situation.

Framework

The SDGs-in-the-Classroom Toolkit

The Toolkit developed by York University enables the pan-university interdisciplinary infusion of
the SDGs into classrooms at which will reinforce the commitment to make positive change for
students, campuses, and our local and global communities.

Using the SDGs as a pedagogical framework for the student learning experience strengthens its
application to education, links purpose with impact, and encourages students to take the first step to
right the future. Every program and faculty member will be able to identify how their classrooms can
welcome an SDG discussion, activity, or lesson.

Thesis

Strategic Recommendations for the Design of Nudges towards a Sustainable Society.

This research analyzes guides for designing nudges and the current practices of nudge designers to discover its potential to guide human behavior towards sustainability. Using the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development the researchers conclude that nudging can effectively create incremental changes towards sustainable behavior.

Article

Self-nudging and the citizen choice architect

This article argues that nudges can often be turned into self-nudges:
empowering interventions that enable people to design and structure their own
decision environments – that is, to act as citizen choice architects.
